When I was in school the most amazing a dolt thing that we could do was have a checking account. I remember a friend of mine who had just come with her dad to the bank, where he opened a checking account for her and deposited her allowance each week. As a teenager this helped her learn financial responsibility by properly handling a checking account. This was a very good lesson and to this day, I still am in touch with her, she is very on top of her finances. Having a credit card as a teenager never even crossed our minds. A credit card was something and adult used, exclusively. Of course there were times when a teenager might have his parents’ credit card to go shopping but that’s about it.
Because of ATM cards and debit cards, the next evolution in teaching fiscal responsibility is getting a credit card for you teenager. You can either get an additional credit card from your credit card account for your teenager, or you can open up credit cards for your teenagers in their own name. For a teenager to have a credit card they have to be at least 18 years old because they’re signing a contract. However you may find that your teenager will be regulated two pre-paid credit cards, secured credit cards, or a debit card.
Credit cards for teenagers are actually very good ideas, just as getting a checking account for your teenager is a good idea as well because as it is stated above once you are into the adult financial market is not the time to try and learn how to use a credit card or checking account. Trust me I know I learned the hard way. Many people who are or were irresponsible with checking accounts and credit cards had parents or authority figures who neglected to teach them how to use them responsibly.
You can search online for credit cards for teenagers and you will find there are quite a few out there. There are even sites that have commentaries on the pros and cons of giving your teenager a credit card and suggestions for which credit cards are best. Do your own research though many times the suggestions are paid for by the credit card companies in the form of advertisements.
Dislike a credit card for an adult you want to find the credit card that has the best offer or benefits with it. Things like low interest, no annual fees, and if possible Cashback or some type of rewards system are all additions to the credit card that you want to have. Having these benefits on the credit card teaches your teenager how to effectively shop for and used the benefits that are associated with their credit card.
Getting credit cards for your teenagers and is a very responsible thing for you to do as a parent. You’ll be helping to sculpt their financial future by teaching them good habits before their out on their own.
